LOSS ANALYSIS: UNDERSTANDING TRENDS
There were some interesting statistics discovered when Sean Nelson, our OSHA Certified Safety Consultant, did a thorough analysis of our group’s workers’ compensation claims.
We have learned that most of the claims were filed by workers between 20 and 30 years of age. What makes this statistic so interesting is that workers are normally the most physically fit during that age range.
We have also learned that a majority of these claims were filed by employees during their first three months of employment.
These trends could suggest either the possibility of fraud or the need for more thorough comprehensive safety training for newly hired workers.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
In addition to the IIPP and other company safety practices, are employees being trained relative to the specific environment they will be working in?
Are safety meetings being conducted and documented on a regular basis?
Is the company open to safety suggestions from employees? Is the worksite company open to safety suggestions from outsiders?
Does every employee have a clear understanding of how to use every type of safety device found on site?
Has a Job Hazard Analysis been conducted for each worksite?
Are all accidents and injuries being reported immediately? Are ‘near misses’ or ‘close calls’ being reported to supervisors?
It is our goal to provide our members with the tools and information necessary to promote the safest work environment possible. We hope our members will utilize all the resources the Guard Service Association now has to offer to help minimize the frequency and severity of workers’ compensation claims.
